Family Matters…

May 6th, 2008

Last week was a curious old week for me on Facebook.

While the powers that be rolled out the new Facebook chat function (don’t you just love it, saves time on all that inboxing and wall writing), I was amazed to see how many of my family had started using the site.

My 76 year old Nana requested my friendship on Tuesday and befriended all 14 of her grandchildren. Suddenly, she can quickly check what all her grandkids (and some of her great grandchildren) are up to and she’s loving it.

Perhaps more worrying are the latest actions of my 50-something Aunt; all three of her children were early adopters of the site and she finally signed-up herself when one child started a round the world trip earlier this year.

I’ve been curious about Auntie’s progress so have followed it with interest. First it was friend requests, then pokes, then addition of the “Top friends” application, then she sent a round of virtual drinks and then this week she discovered the power of The Wall.

Flashing up on my news feed I saw the following Wall entries between my Aunt and her youngest son:

Aunt wrote at 6:04pm on April 25th, 2008
“Hey, how come you’re editing your profile when you’re supposed to be studying !!!!! MUM!!!!!!”

Son replied at 7:41pm on April 25th, 2008
“ha ha that’s why i joined the group “if i fail my degree i’m sueing facebook” : ) ps you don’t need to write who it’s from, it’s not a letter: ) x”

Still think this digital “thing” is just for teenagers?
